The most recent in the Elixir range, Optiweb is designed to be the most inconspicuous complete string coating available, and it actually is! Elixir Optiweb is a complete polymer film coating which protects the whole string; it’s completely impermeable and keeps all gunk, oil, and sweat from reaching and degrading the strings.
For the most part, when players talk about coated guitar strings they’re talking about Elixir strings, and often the conversation is centred around whether one likes the feel of coated strings or not, preferring ‘normal’ strings. It can be, and should be, a very personal thing and the feeling of a coating can be very conspicuous.
Elixir’s most popular strings are Nanoweb coated which is the leading guitar strings mid-weight coating; you can feel this coating and it’s loved by many players. Moreover, Elixir also makes a Polyweb coating which can not only be felt but actually seen too! This coating is the heaviest available and fills the gap between the windings; not only the greatest amount of protection for the strings but also reducing finger noise and squeak.
The most recent in the Elixir range is Optiweb. Optiweb is designed to be the most inconspicuous complete string coating available, and it actually is! As with the afore mentioned ranges Optiweb is a complete polymer film coating which protects the whole string; it’s completely impermeable and keeps all gunk, oil, and sweat from reaching and degrading the strings.
On the bench, laying an Optiweb and Nanoweb string next to each other visually it’s initially difficult to tell although given a minute you’ll notice the Nanoweb string is slightly lighter in colour. However, by running a finger along each string it’s instantly noticeable how the Optiweb string has a more natural feel without the smoothness of the Nanoweb coating.
Honestly, it’s impressive… on the guitar, they sound identical. Genuinely, they sound the same and I guess that’s exactly what some of us want: a set of strings that maintain their tone life for a long time without feeling there’s a coating or barrier between you and the strings.
