Wikipedia - The V-Pick is a hand made guitar pick created in 1980 by guitarist Vinni Smith. By design these guitar picks were unique, being the first picks to originate from cast acrylic. The pick was originally developed for more volume, better tone, fast playing action and beauty.
I’ve been using V-picks for 5yrs now and I love the huge variety of different picks that Vinni Smith has created.
The V-picks I’ve used are very unique and very useful to various techniques and styles of playing. The v-picks are made from a plastic that when warms up seems to stick, making them gip to my fingers providing a sound feel and comfortable playing experience
I like many of the v-pick collection and here are my top V-picks .
Medium pointed - This pick is my favourite and most used , the bevel is super for both fast and fat tones . At 1.5mm its nice and thick. It’s a bigger pick than a jazz II type pick so if your used to tiny picks there is also a small pointed version. These bad boy picks come in red, clear, pink and pearl white.
Dimension (junior) un-buffed – This is my second favourite of the v-picks. They are 4.32mm thick and these unique picks have a rough edge and are super loud with a gritty sound, they are very bright and cut into the mix really well. These bad boys make it super easy to shred fast because the tip is very pointed and as its over 4mm thick you hardly need to move to strike the strings making it easier to pick.
The Dimension Junior has a larger version of the same name and also a buffed version. The buffed it very glassy and smooth with a very thick tone and makes sweep picking styles a breeze.
Diamond and Snake - I’ve put these two picks into the same category as they are both 3 sided with the snake being the larger of the two. These picks are similar to the Dimension in thickness and have a smooth buffed surfaced. They differ from the dimension in that they have 3 sides that are the same playable bevel type. They have a massive loud tone and are easy to play fast lines with due to the their 4.05 mm thickness.
Medium Rounded – this pick has a round edge is 2.8mm thick. It is great for a thick bluesy Robben Ford type style and tone. These very comfortable picks do not have a pointed edge so they are not shredders picks. I would definitely recommend them for their thick tone and how the rounded edge glides over strings like butter.
The perfect V-pick
There are such a huge variety of V-picks that it should be easy finding one that is perfect for you. They come thinner and pointy for shredding like the Stiletto and Venom , un-buffed for more raspy sounds like the 1980 and the Nexus, so try a few out yourself and find your perfect pick of choice .
