The string begins with a hex core for tuning stability, strength and durability which is then wrapped in either 92/8 phosphor bronze wire for acoustic guitar and mandolin (which has the added benefit of long tone life and corrosion resistance), nickel-iron for pedal steel or stainless steel for the banjo. The whole string is then cryogenically treated which not only extends the life of the string but enhances the tone. Set gauging is then chosen based on decades of knowledge acquired from GHS artists.
