Elixir’s Nanoweb coating is still the leading guitar strings mid-weight coating.  You can feel this coating and it’s loved by many players.

Before I carry on, I think it’s worth mentioning that Elixir is part of W. L. Gore & Associates.  Yes, the company that specialises in fluoropolymers, and produces that waterproof, breathable fabric called Gore-Tex found on most high-performance clothing.  As such you can be sure that Elixir products are innovative, forward-thinking, advanced, and reliable.

Elixir’s flagship coating seals the entire string inside an impermeable barrier which keeps outs all moisture, oils, and dirt - the stuff that usually kills strings.  This means the strings can last up to 3x longer - well, that’s the official line, however we have evidence of Elixir strings lasting well over a year!  After substantial playing, and towards the end of their stated life you may start to see some fraying of the coating around the high-impact areas (picking position) but that’s pretty much cosmetic and the strings will keep going, and going, and going… !

How about the feel?  Well, as I started with above, you can feel the coating and that’s a purely personal thing.  It’s slick, and smooth.  Many players love the feel of this and won’t ever go back to ‘regular’ strings.

NB. If you have a guitar hanging on the wall that you only play occasionally, a set of coated strings is the perfect choice for it.  They’ll last through the environmental changes in the room over time and be ready to play whenever you feel like it!
