The mid 1950’s saw the opening of the first ever solely electric guitar store in the world run by none other than Ernie Ball himself. By the 60’s he’d realized how important accessories were to guitarists! He began making up custom string sets for people in store and in 1962 the first Ernie Ball Custom String Gauge sets were born. Shortly after, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards discovered Ernie Ball strings and has been using them ever since. By 1967 Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Pete Townsend were all using Ernie Ball strings and then in the late 60’s Ernie Ball unveiled the world famous classic ‘Slinky’ branded, vibrantly coloured custom gauge electric guitar strings. NPS (nickel plated steel) slinkys followed in the early 70’s and, in their super-bright day-glo packaging are still the most famous guitar string sets in the world!
